About Hal

Hal Schrieve is a librarian who also writes books about teens, queer community, monsters and aliens. Hir first book Out of Salem (2019), about zombies and werewolves, was selected for the National Book Award Long List for Young People’s Literature in 2019. Hir second book, How To Get Over the End of the World, (2023) is about a telepath, a queer youth group on the brink of disaster, and trans teens making music. Hal’s indie graphic novel for grown-ups Vivian’s Ghost was published by Go Press Girl in 2024. Hal’s vampire novel Fawn’s Blood came out September 16, 2025.

Hal writes queer fiction for young people. Hal also writes comics, some of which you can find here.

Hal Schrieve is represented by Kelly Van Sant at KT Literary.

When Hal is not writing books, ze works as a children’s librarian. As a librarian, Hal has written educator guides to other queer books for children and teens.

Hal has had poetry in Vetch magazine, and is featured in Stacked Deck Press’s 2018 trans comics anthology We’re Still Here.

Hal earned hir Master’s in Library Science from Queens College. Hal lives in Queens, NY with hir husband Nicholas and a huge cat.
